Thailand Proof of Funds: How Much Money Do You Need to Enter?
Last Updated on September 27, 2025 by admin
If you’re traveling to Thailand, immigration officers may ask you to show proof of funds to ensure you can support yourself during your stay. While this check doesn’t happen often, it’s important to know the rules so you’re not caught off guard.
💰 How Much Money Is Required?
For Most Western Tourists (60-day visa exemption):
- Solo travelers: 20,000 baht ($550-600 USD)
- Families: 40,000 baht ($1,100-1,200 USD)
This applies to Americans, Europeans, Australians, Canadians and other major tourist countries. Those traveling on 15 day Visa On Arrival plans may only be required to show 10,000 baht.
✅ What Counts as Proof?
✓ ACCEPTED (Cash Preferred):
- Thai baht (preferred)
- US dollars
- Euros
- Other major currencies
❌ NOT ACCEPTED:
- Credit cards
- Debit cards
- Bank statements (risky – immigration prefers cash)
- Mobile payment apps
🔍 Do They Actually Check?
Reality Check:
- Very rare for regular tourists at major airports
- More likely for frequent border runners or budget backpackers
- Almost certain if you’ve had previous immigration issues
While checks are uncommon, the consequences of being unprepared are severe.
🚨 What Happens If You Can’t Show Funds?
If immigration checks and you don’t have proof:
- Denied entry and deportation on next flight
- Detention until you arrange departure
- Your costs: Flight changes, accommodation, meals
ATM Before Immigration? Some airports have ATMs before immigration. BKK airport does not. Even if there were an ATM it might not help if you haven’t withdrawn funds before speaking with an Immigration agent. In principle, Immigration wants proof you had funds BEFORE traveling to Thailand. If they permitted you to go to an ATM machine after the fact, they might suspect someone loaned you the money.
💡 Best Strategy: Bring Cash
Recommended Approach:
- Carry full amount in cash
- Keep in money belt or secure location
- Use credit cards for actual spending after arrival
Why Cash Only?
- Immigration officers prefer immediate, liquid funds so no credit cards
- No language barriers or verification issues like with bank statements
- Most reliable option based on traveler reports
📊 Quick Currency Guide
Currency | 20,000 Baht Equivalent |
---|---|
US Dollar | $550-600 |
Euro | €500-550 |
British Pound | £450-500 |
Australian Dollar | A$850-950 |
Bottom Line
Many tourists never get checked and choose to get Thai baht after passing through Immigration. But if you’re singled out, cash will best satisfy immigration requirements. The small inconvenience of carrying cash beats the major problem of being denied entry.
