U-Tapao International Airport (UTP) sits in Ban Chang district of Rayong Province, not Pattaya. While commonly called “Pattaya Airport,” it’s actually located about 45 kilometers south of central Pattaya and roughly 140 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. The airport is noticeably closer to Rayong City than to Pattaya itself. While you can’t access many international destinations, the airport can be useful for domestic hops to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Udon Thani. Russian travelers may find it handy as well as travelers headed for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

I hope to test out all the information soon and update it with photos and my personal experience getting to and flying out of this airport.

Airlines Operating from U-Tapao

As of October 2025, five main airlines serve U-Tapao with scheduled passenger flights:

  • Bangkok Airways – year-round service to Koh Samui (USM) and Phuket (HKT)
  • Thai Lion Air – seasonal flights to Chiang Mai (CNX) and Udon Thani (UTH), October to March)
  • AirAsia – seasonal service to Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
  • Azur Air (extensive Russian routes)
  • S7 Airlines (flights to Irkutsk)

The airport currently offers non-stop flights to 15 destinations across two countries, with roughly 102 flights departing monthly or about 21 flights per week.

Popular Destinations from U-Tapao

Domestic Routes (All Nonstop/Direct Flights)

U-Tapao currently offers nonstop flights to four Thai cities:

  • Koh Samui (USM) – Bangkok Airways, year-round: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Phuket (HKT) – Bangkok Airways, year-round: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Chiang Mai (CNX) – Thai Lion Air, seasonal October to March – 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Udon Thani (UTH) – Thai Lion Air, seasonal October to March – 1 hour 20 minutes

Important Note: There are no flights between U-Tapao and Bangkok’s airports – Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). If you need to reach Bangkok after landing at U-Tapao, you must use ground transportation (bus, taxi, or ride-sharing apps).

International Routes

Russia (Primary International Market) All Russian routes are nonstop flights operated by Azur Air and S7 Airlines, serving 10 destinations including Moscow Vnukovo (longest route at 4,478 miles, approximately 10 hours 30 minutes), Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, and other major Russian cities.

Southeast Asia

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL) – AirAsia, seasonal, nonstop – approximately 2 hours

China Chinese routes have fluctuated significantly since the pandemic. Routes historically included Macau, Shanghai, Nanning, and other cities, peaking at 41 weekly flights in 2019. These routes typically involve connections and are inconsistent. Always verify current schedules.

Currently No Direct Flights To:

  • Cambodia or Vietnam (despite proximity)
  • Bangkok (BKK or DMK)
  • Singapore
  • United States, Canada, Europe (except Russia), Australia, India

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is actively working to attract flights from India, Vietnam, China, and Kazakhstan with landing fee incentives, so the destination list may expand.

Travel Time from Central Pattaya to U-Tapao

From the Soi Buakhao area in central Pattaya, expect:

  • Driving time: 40 to 50 minutes in normal traffic
  • Distance: approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles)

The journey typically takes under an hour, making U-Tapao significantly closer to Pattaya than either Bangkok airport.

Comparing Airport Travel Times

Route Travel Time Distance
Central Pattaya to UTP 40 to 50 minutes 45 km
Central Pattaya to BKK (Suvarnabhumi) 1.5 to 2 hours 140 km
Central Pattaya to DMK (Don Mueang) 2 to 2.5 hours 150 km

U-Tapao offers travelers staying in Pattaya up to an hour advantage over Suvarnabhumi and up to two hours over Don Mueang.

Transportation Options from Pattaya

Budget Bus Service (Cheapest Option)

Suvarnabhumi Burapha Bus Company operates direct bus service between Pattaya and U-Tapao Airport:

From Pattaya to U-Tapao:

  • Departure location: CK Residence, South Pattaya Road
  • Times: 09:30, 12:00, and 15:00
  • Price: 200 baht per person

From U-Tapao to Pattaya:

  • Times: 12:30, 14:00, and 17:00
  • Price: 200 baht per person

The bus makes stops in Pattaya and connects with the Chonburi route. Journey time is approximately 40 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and stops.

Grab or Bolt (Mid-Range Option)

Ride-hailing apps typically charge around 800 baht from central Pattaya to U-Tapao, though actual fares may be less depending on time of day, traffic, and demand. Given that U-Tapao is much closer to Pattaya than Bangkok airports (where Grab costs 1500+ baht), many travelers report paying less than the airport’s fixed 1000 baht taxi rate. Pre-book through the app when you land, though expect 15 to 30 minute wait times during busy periods.

Airport Taxi Service

Three counters at U-Tapao arrivals offer fixed-price taxis at 1000 baht. No haggling is involved, and this includes one destination in Pattaya.

Shared Minivan

Costs 250 to 300 baht per person. AirAsia operates minivans from Central Festival Pattaya Beach for their passengers. Travelers should book ahead and allow extra time as minivans often wait for full capacity before departing.

Pre-booked Private Transfer

Services like 12Go Asia offer private cars for 700 to 1000 baht when booked in advance. Benefits include guaranteed pickup times and direct service without waiting for other passengers.

Transportation Cost Comparison

Transport Type Cost Journey Time Best For
Public Bus 200 baht 40 to 90 min Budget travelers with flexible schedules
Grab/Bolt ~800 baht (possibly less) 40 to 50 min Solo travelers wanting convenience
Shared Minivan 250 to 300 baht 45 to 90 min Budget travelers, groups
Pre-booked Taxi 700 to 800 baht 40 to 50 min Direct service, guaranteed pickup
Airport Taxi 1000 baht 40 to 50 min Last-minute arrivals, convenience

Are Flights Cheaper at U-Tapao?

The answer varies by route and timing. U-Tapao primarily serves budget and charter carriers, which can offer competitive prices. However, limited flight frequency and fewer destinations sometimes result in higher fares compared to Bangkok’s airports.

For domestic Thai destinations like Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui, prices are often comparable to or slightly higher than Bangkok airports. The real advantage comes from saved ground transportation costs and time rather than cheaper airfares.

Western Traveler Experiences

Feedback from international travelers reveals several common experiences:

The Good

  • Fast immigration and security processing
  • Much smaller crowds than Bangkok airports
  • Quick baggage claim (typically 15 to 20 minutes)
  • Easy taxi arrangements upon arrival
  • Relatively new Terminal 2 opened in 2019

The Challenges

  • Confusing ground transportation arrangements for first-timers
  • Limited English signage in some areas
  • Minivan departure confusion (passengers report unclear instructions about which bus to board)
  • Small airport with limited food and shopping options
  • Photography restrictions due to military operations (windows must remain closed during takeoff and landing over military areas)

One traveler review noted the airport can feel “a bit mad with passengers wandering aimlessly” and described immigration queues as occasionally “massive.” However, most reviews indicate significantly faster processing than Bangkok’s busy airports.

Who Uses U-Tapao Most?

The airport’s passenger demographics are distinct:

Russian tourists comprise the largest international user group. Azur Air operates extensive seasonal and year-round routes connecting multiple Russian cities to U-Tapao, making it the primary European gateway for the Eastern Economic Corridor.

Domestic Thai travelers use the airport for holiday connections to popular beach destinations like Phuket and Koh Samui.

Pattaya-based expats and long-term residents appreciate the proximity for domestic travel within Thailand.

Chinese tourists historically represented a significant portion of traffic, with 41 direct weekly flights from China reported in 2019, though these numbers fluctuated significantly during and after pandemic travel restrictions.

Is U-Tapao Better Than Bangkok Airports for Domestic and Regional Flights?

When U-Tapao Makes Sense:

  • You’re staying in Pattaya, Rayong, or the Eastern Seaboard
  • Flying to Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, or Udon Thani
  • You value convenience over flight options
  • Time savings matter more than potentially slightly higher airfares
  • You’re connecting from Russia or Kuala Lumpur

When Bangkok Airports Are Better:

  • You need international connections beyond Russia and Malaysia
  • More flight time options are important
  • You’re already in Bangkok
  • You want access to airport rail links and extensive ground transport
  • You need business-class options (limited at U-Tapao)
  • Premium lounges and extensive shopping matter to you

Airport Facilities

U-Tapao offers basic but adequate facilities:

  • Restaurants including KFC, Coffee World, and local Thai options
  • Limited duty-free shopping
  • Currency exchange services
  • ATMs outside the terminal
  • Small pharmacy
  • Car rental counters (Avis, Thai Rent-A-Car, Thrifty, Budget)
  • Ferry and taxi reservation desk

The airport feels more like a regional hub than an international gateway, which can be refreshing for travelers tired of mega-airport chaos.

Future Development Plans

The Thai government has ambitious plans for U-Tapao, including:

  • Expansion to handle 60 million passengers annually (currently around 3 million)
  • A high-speed rail link connecting U-Tapao with Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports (delayed until 2028 to 2029)
  • Eastern Aviation City development with commercial and entertainment facilities
  • New runways and expanded terminal capacity

However, these projects face significant delays, particularly the high-speed rail connection that has missed multiple deadlines.

Practical Tips for Using U-Tapao

  1. Arrive two hours early for domestic flights, three hours for international despite the smaller size, as check-in counters may have limited staffing.
  2. Pre-book your transportation to save money. The 200 baht bus is excellent for budget travelers, while Grab/Bolt baht offers better value than the 1000 baht airport taxis.
  3. Bring Thai baht cash as some vendors may not accept cards, and the bus service only accepts cash.
  4. Don’t expect extensive shopping or dining compared to Bangkok airports. Grab something substantial before arriving if you’re picky about food.
  5. Photography rules are strict due to military operations. Keep cameras away during takeoff and landing.
  6. Download offline maps as cellular coverage can be spotty in parts of the airport.
  7. Check bus schedules carefully if using the Suvarnabhumi Burapha service, as there are only three departures daily in each direction.

The Bottom Line

U-Tapao Airport serves a specific niche: travelers prioritizing convenience and time savings for Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard. While not offering the extensive flight network or amenities of Bangkok’s airports, its proximity to Pattaya and relatively hassle-free operations make it worthwhile for the right situations.

The airport works best for domestic Thai destinations and Russian travelers. Western tourists from North America, Europe (outside Russia), and Australia will still need to fly through Bangkok’s international airports for long-haul connections, then potentially use U-Tapao for domestic hops to places like Phuket or Koh Samui.

For Indian travelers, the lack of direct flights from India to U-Tapao means connections through Bangkok remain necessary, though the airport could become relevant for domestic onward travel after arriving in Thailand.

As Thailand continues developing the Eastern Economic Corridor, U-Tapao’s role will likely expand, potentially making it a more attractive option in coming years once promised infrastructure improvements materialize.
